If you're moving from Birmingham to Florida, you're looking at a roughly 640-mile haul — and unlike a quick local shuffle, you'll want movers who know what they're doing on a long-distance route. I've tracked down five solid operators in Birmingham who handle interstate moves regularly, along with what you'll actually pay and what to expect when you get to Florida.
Out of the movers I reviewed in Birmingham, these five handle long-distance relocations to Florida and maintain solid track records:
4.5 / 5 | 130 Inverness Center Place, Birmingham, AL 35242
Over 94% of Changing Spaces' reviews landed in positive territory — among the highest I see for any mover in the region. Their customers consistently praise efficiency, professionalism, and careful handling. You'll find crews that work fast without treating your stuff like it's disposable, which matters when you're trusting someone 640 miles away.
The company's been in business 21 years, holds an A+ rating with the BBB, and offers the full suite: local moves, interstate, packing, crating, storage, even pianos. They accept credit card payment, which makes tracking expenses easier.
The downsides, though small in number, include occasional damage claims and unexpected charges. If you go with them, get everything in writing.

4.4 / 5 | 130 Industrial Dr, Birmingham, AL 35211
I don't often see 99% positive reviews. New Latitude Movers hit that mark across 245 customer inputs — and the feedback backs it up. People consistently mention swift crews, quick turnarounds, and movers who go beyond expectations (think furniture assembly, accommodating last-minute changes). Stress-free booking, stress-free moving. That's what folks report.
New Latitude's been operating 26 years. They handle local and interstate moves, offer packing, unpacking, pianos, crating, and storage. Like Changing Spaces, they're solid on reliability and communication — two things that separate good movers from the ones that leave you frustrated.
The complaints are rare but real: occasional delivery delays and difficulty reaching them by phone.

4.4 / 5 | 3114 Bellwood Drive, Vestavia, AL 35243
With 94% positive reviews from 270 customers, MoveDaddy earns consistent praise for speed, friendliness, and meticulous care. Customers describe them as motivated (no pun intended), always polite, and careful with belongings. What stands out: rates are often called fair relative to other operators, and quotes are transparent and reliable.
They've been in business 10 years, offer local and interstate moves, packing, unpacking, and specialty services like pianos, hot tubs, and safes. If you have unusual items to move, MoveDaddy's equipped to handle them.
Negatives: 5% of reviews cite arrival delays, rare unprofessionalism, and occasional item damage. Not catastrophic, but worth factoring in.

4.2 / 5 | 417 22nd St N, Birmingham, AL 35203
Road Runner's ratings are split roughly 50/50: about half their reviews praise swift, courteous movers and a seamless process. The other half cite property damage, inconsistent communication, and unexpected charges. That's a red flag. I'd call them a mixed bag — when they're good, they're professional and efficient, but when things go wrong, they're slow to respond.
They've been around 45 years, which says something about longevity, but newer doesn't always mean better, and longevity doesn't guarantee consistency. If you choose them, document everything and get damage clauses clarified upfront.

4.3 / 5 | 1969-A Chandalar Dr, Pelham, AL 35124
Motivated Movers scores 92.7% positive across 248 customer reviews. They're praised for efficiency, professionalism, and care — quick moves, solid communication, furniture handled with respect. The BBB gives them an A+ rating.
They've been operating 18 years, handle local and interstate moves, and offer a wide range of services including packing, unpacking, pianos, hot tubs, antiques, safes, and crating. For a company that's been around since 2006, they maintain solid operational standards.
Small percentage of complaints mention damaged items and unresolved claims, but these are infrequent.

Here's what you'll actually pay based on home size and service type:
| Move Size | Full-Service Movers | Moving Containers | Rental Truck |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1 bedroom | $1,208–$3,508 | $659–$1,656 | $458–$840 |

| 4+ bedrooms | $3,636–$7,502 | $1,554–$2,966 | $580–$1,241 |
These estimates are based on a 643-mile move from Birmingham, AL to Florida and reflect current market conditions. Your final cost will depend on move size, added services, parking challenges, fuel rates, and scheduling. Always get multiple quotes to confirm pricing.
A full-service move is the most straightforward but also the priciest option. For a studio or one-bedroom, expect $1,208–$3,508. Two to three bedrooms run $2,251–$5,420. Four or more bedrooms land at $3,636–$7,502.
You're paying for labor, transportation, and liability — all handled by professionals. No driving the truck yourself, no heavy lifting. If you're moving valuable or fragile items, this is usually worth the premium.
Moving containers like PODS give you flexibility: they drop off a unit, you load at your pace, they transport it, you unload in Florida. Costs are lower than full-service but higher than DIY truck rental.
Studio to one-bedroom: $659–$1,656. Two to three bedrooms: $1,176–$2,268. Four or more bedrooms: $1,554–$2,966.
Several variables move the needle on pricing:
Before you move, understand the financial shift you're making. Florida's not just warmer — it's pricier.
| Metric | Birmingham, AL | Florida |
|---|---|---|
| Average rent | $1,250 | $1,444 |
| Average home cost | $125,988 | $392,176 |
| Average income (per capita) | $39,403 | $67,917 |
| Cost of living index | 87 | 102 |
| Unemployment rate | 5.6% | 2.9% |
| State income tax | 5.0% | 0.0% |
Rent: Expect to pay roughly 16% more in Florida. If you're renting, that's an extra $200+ per month.
Home prices: This is a shock. Homes in Florida cost 211% more than in Birmingham. If you're buying, your mortgage will be substantially higher.
Income: On the flip side, salaries in Florida are typically 72% higher. That can offset some housing costs — if you land a comparable job.
Cost of living overall: Florida's cost of living index is 17% higher. Your dollars stretch less far.
Tax advantage: Florida has no state income tax, which means you keep more of your paycheck. That's a real benefit if you're earning a decent income.
Job market: Florida's unemployment rate is 48% lower than Birmingham's. More jobs available — if your field is strong there.
Summer highs: Florida ~91°F, Birmingham ~90°F — nearly identical. You won't notice much difference in peak heat.
Winter lows: Florida ~49°F, Birmingham ~32°F. That's a significant shift. No shoveling snow, no icy driveways, lower heating bills. If winters bother you, Florida's a relief.
Rainfall: Both cities get about 55–56 inches per year. Rain levels are similar, though timing differs.
Snow: Florida doesn't get snow. Birmingham gets about 1 inch per year. If you hate winter maintenance, Florida wins decisively.
Population: Florida has 22.6 million people; Birmingham has about 196,000. You're moving to a much larger, more urban environment in most parts of Florida.
Political lean: Birmingham leans Democratic; Florida leans Republican. That may or may not matter to you, but it shapes local culture and policy.
Crime index: Florida's crime index is 21.39; Birmingham's is 61.64. Florida's lower score suggests a safer environment. However, crime varies wildly by neighborhood in both states — pick your area carefully.
Moving to Florida involves more than packing a truck. Here's what you need to handle:
Moving company licensing: Florida requires anyone engaged in for-profit local and intrastate moving to register annually with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Verify your mover has a current license before booking.
Moving insurance: Insurance requirements differ by state. Most movers offer Released Value Protection (limited coverage at 60 cents per pound per article) at no extra cost. For full-value coverage, ask your mover or hire third-party insurance. Given the distance and potential for damage, I'd recommend paying for additional protection.
Change of address: File your USPS change of address form at least a week before moving. Set your official move date so mail forwarding starts when you arrive.
HOA rules: Some communities have specific rules about move-in days or times. Check with your HOA (if you have one) before moving day.
Elevator reservation: Many Florida buildings require advance elevator booking. Call ahead if you're moving into an apartment or condo.
Truck parking permits: Some municipalities require parking permits for moving trucks. Check local regulations before your move date.
Moving permits: Florida doesn't require moving permits statewide, but parking regulations vary by city. Call your new city's non-emergency line if you're unsure.
Use our moving checklist to track everything that needs handling before, during, and after your move. It's easier to check boxes than remember details mid-chaos.
Once you're settled, Florida has plenty to explore.
Museums: Wynwood Walls, The Ringling, Edison and Ford Winter Estates, Hemingway Home and Museum, The Dali Museum.
Parks: Dry Tortugas National Park, Everglades National Park, De Soto National Memorial, Fort Matanzas National Monument, Ocala National Forest.
Sports: Miami Heat (NBA), Orlando Magic (NBA), Miami Marlins (MLB), Tampa Bay Rays (MLB), Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL).
Universities: University of Florida, Florida State University, University of South Florida, University of Central Florida, Florida International University.
Typically one to six days, depending on the service type. Full-service movers handle it in a few days. Container services take longer if you're flexible on timing. DIY truck rental depends entirely on your driving pace and how much time you spend loading/unloading. Summer moves may take longer due to higher demand.
Yes. Six Birmingham-based movers offer custom crating — ideal for artwork, antiques, and fragile pieces. When requesting a quote, ask specifically about crate construction, padding, and lead times.
Use a professional auto transport service. They'll handle all logistics, protect your vehicle, and manage pickup and delivery. It's faster and safer than driving it yourself, especially if you're hiring full-service movers for your household goods.
Warmer weather year-round, abundant water recreation (beaches, springs, lakes), lower taxes, and a strong job market in many sectors. If you're retiring or seeking outdoor lifestyle, Florida's a popular choice. Cost of living is higher, though, so it's not universally affordable.
Start by getting quotes from the five companies listed above. Compare pricing, read reviews, and verify licenses. Use our moving cost calculator to estimate costs based on your move details, then confirm with actual quotes.
One Birmingham mover accepts cash, but it's rare. Most prefer credit card, ACH transfer, or cashier's check for accountability and record-keeping. You'll typically pay a deposit to secure your booking and move date, with the balance due at pickup or after delivery. Always confirm payment terms before booking.
