Full-Service Moving Cost Details
Hiring professional movers gives you the least stress and the most control over timeline. A studio/one-bedroom costs $1,334–$5,907; a 2–3 bedroom runs $3,902–$8,153; and a 4+ bedroom is $7,642–$11,891. Price swings depend on exactly what you're moving, how far your pickup/dropoff points are from highways, and whether it's peak season.
Moving Container Costs
If you want flexibility on timing without the DIY stress of a rental truck, portable moving containers range from $1,319–$3,397 for a small load, $2,537–$4,952 for 2–3 bedrooms, and $3,402–$7,047 for larger homes. You pack at your pace, they handle transport, and you unpack when ready.
Rental Truck Costs
Budget $1,539–$2,956 for a studio/one-bedroom, $1,617–$3,661 for 2–3 bedrooms, and $2,191–$4,539 for 4+ bedrooms. These estimates include fuel. You drive the truck yourself, so you save labor costs—but you're responsible for loading, unloading, and navigating 2,925 miles across multiple states.
What Affects Your Moving Cost
Move size: The more stuff you have, the higher the bill. A studio is cheaper than a 4-bedroom house—this is unavoidable.
Time of year: Summer is peak season. Moving companies jack up rates in June, July, and August. If you can move in late fall or early spring, you'll save 15–25%.
Service level: Full-service movers are most expensive. Moving containers are mid-range. DIY truck rentals are cheapest but demand the most labor from you.
Distance from main highways: If your pickup or dropoff is rural or requires significant detours, expect higher fees.
Insurance and add-ons: Full-valuation coverage costs more than released-value protection, but it's worth it for valuable items.
Cost of Living: San Bernardino vs. Massachusetts
This matters more than you might think. Here's how the two places stack up:
| Metric | San Bernardino | Massachusetts | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avg. rent | $1,950 | $1,588 | 19% less in MA |
| Avg. home price | $481,419 | $623,131 | 29% more in MA |
| Per capita income | $55,372 | $96,505 | 74% higher in MA |
| Cost of living index | 119 | 100 | 16% less in MA |
| Unemployment rate | 10.6% | 3.9% | 63% lower in MA |
| State income tax | 13.3% | 9.0% | 32% lower in MA |
The bottom line: Rent is cheaper in Massachusetts, and the job market is stronger. Income taxes are lower, and per-capita income is significantly higher. You'll likely find your dollar stretches further, even though home prices are higher.

Before You Move: Local Regulations & Requirements
A few things to handle before moving day:
HOA rules: Check your current and future HOA's restrictions. Some buildings have rules about move-in dates, elevator reservations, or parking for moving trucks.
Elevator reservation: If either building has an elevator, reserve it early. High-rise moves require coordination.
Truck parking permits: Some Massachusetts cities require moving truck parking permits. Check local regulations in your destination city ahead of time.
Massachusetts moving company licensing: Movers in Massachusetts must be licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities – Transportation Oversight Division for local and intrastate service. They're required to carry cargo insurance and publicly file their tariffs. Verify your mover's license on the state regulatory website before booking.
USPS change of address: Submit your change of address form with USPS at least one week before moving day. This ensures mail forwarding starts on time.
Moving insurance: Released Value Protection (60¢ per pound per article) is free but offers minimal coverage. If you have valuable items, discuss full-value coverage or third-party insurance with your mover.
Use a checklist: A solid moving checklist keeps you organized and ensures you don't forget critical steps like utility disconnects, address changes, and service transfers.
Timeline: How Long Does This Move Take?
Expect 7–21 days from pickup to delivery. Most movers aim for 10–14 days on this route. Summer moves can stretch longer due to demand. Confirm delivery windows with your mover in writing before the truck leaves California.
