If you're moving from San Francisco to Ohio, you already know this isn't a small decision. You're crossing roughly 2,430 miles, leaving one of the most expensive metro areas in the country, and landing somewhere with a genuinely different cost structure, climate, and pace of life. There's a lot to think through — so I'll get straight to the numbers, the movers worth considering, and the stuff people don't figure out until they're already mid-move.
Top Moving Companies from San Francisco to Ohio
Out of 90 San Francisco movers that handle interstate work, these five stand out for the SF-to-Ohio route based on ratings and review volume:
- Eagle Moving & Storage, Inc. — 4.64 / 5
- Gentle Giant Moving Company — 4.58 / 5
- NorthStar Moving Company — 4.52 / 5
- Pure Moving Company — 4.48 / 5
- Good Green Moving — 4.44 / 5
Here's what I found when I actually went through the reviews on each.
Eagle Moving & Storage, Inc.
274 Wattis Way, South San Francisco, CA 94080 | (415) 404-7400
- 4.6 / 5 overall
- Yelp reviews — 464 reviews
- Google reviews — 190 reviews
- BBB: Grade A+
- 87% positive | 12% negative
State license: 0190673 | DOT: 3670248 | 15 years in business
Across 634 reviews, Eagle's most consistent praise comes down to three things: crews that move fast, careful handling, and clean communication from booking through delivery. Pricing is competitive for the market, and customers note the teams treat fragile items with actual care — not just lip service. The complaints that do surface (damaged items, late arrivals, occasional scheduling gaps) aren't unusual for this industry, but they're worth raising directly before you sign anything. For the money, Eagle is a reliable pick on a route this long.
Services: Local, interstate, packing/unpacking, pianos, art, antiques, crating, storage, full-valuation coverage
Gentle Giant Moving Company
361 Swift Ave, South San Francisco, CA 94080 | (415) 544-7000
- 4.5 / 5 overall
- Yelp reviews — 109 reviews
- Google reviews — 23 reviews
- BBB: Grade A+
- 95% positive | 5% negative
State license: 0167668 | DOT: 373544 | 44 years in business
Forty-four years is a long time to stay in business in this industry. Gentle Giant's 95% positive rate across 130 reviews reflects consistent attention to detail and crews that customers describe as organized and genuinely careful with belongings. The occasional complaint involves higher-than-expected costs or communication gaps — which puts them in the premium-leaning tier. Note they also operate as Great Giant Moving Company; confirm which entity you're actually booking under before you sign.
Services: Local, interstate, international, packing/unpacking, pianos, offices, crane vans, storage
NorthStar Moving Company
One Bush Plaza, Suite B-182, San Francisco, CA 94104 | (415) 635-3844
- 4.5 / 5 overall
- Yelp reviews — 959 reviews
- Google reviews — 835 reviews
- BBB: Grade A+
- 92% positive | 7% negative
State license: 0182466 | DOT: 1836576 | 30 years in business
Thirty years in business and over 1,100 reviews to pull from — NorthStar earns its reputation with consistent feedback on friendly crews, careful handling, and transparent pricing. A 7% negative review rate is genuinely below average for long-distance movers. The complaints that do come in mostly involve furniture damage or post-move communication delays. Ask about their claims and protection policies upfront and you'll be ahead of most customers.
Services: Local, interstate, international, packing/unpacking, pianos, art, antiques, crating, storage, full-valuation coverage
Pure Moving Company
401 Terry A Francois Blvd #110, San Francisco, CA 94158 | (415) 919-6497
- 4.4 / 5 overall
- Yelp reviews — 801 reviews
- Google reviews — 1,337 reviews
- BBB: Grade A+
- 98% positive | 2% negative
State license: 0191103 | DOT: 3207734 | 11 years in business
A 97.6% positive rate across more than 1,000 reviews is hard to dismiss. Pure Moving (also operating as Pure Moving & Storage, Inc.) is one of the highest-rated movers in the Bay Area by raw volume, and the feedback holds up across platforms: organized crews, careful packing, clear pre-move communication, and pricing that's upfront rather than surprise-heavy. The rare negatives involve item damage or slower arrivals. At eleven years in, they're still relatively young for a long-distance operator — but the numbers make a strong case.
Services: Local, interstate, packing/unpacking, pianos, offices, crating, storage
Good Green Moving
1355 Market Street Suite 488, San Francisco, CA 94103 | (855) 613-4663
- 4.4 / 5 overall
- Yelp reviews — 236 reviews
- Google reviews — 97 reviews
- BBB: Grade F
- 89% positive | 11% negative
State license: 0191035 | DOT: 2604063 | 12 years in business | Starting ~$70/hr
I'll be upfront: that BBB Grade F is worth taking seriously, even if the Yelp and Google numbers look decent. About 89% of 341 reviews are positive — customers praise the crews, the eco-friendly reusable bin system, and straightforward pricing. But the negative 11% includes reports of damaged items, unresolved complaints, and communication breakdowns with storage services. If you book Good Green Moving, document your expectations clearly, get your protection coverage in writing, and confirm the claims process before your stuff is on a truck heading to Ohio.
Services: Local, interstate, packing/unpacking, pianos, art, antiques, crating, storage, fragile-only packing, full-valuation coverage

Cost to Hire Movers from San Francisco to Ohio
For a studio or one-bedroom, full-service movers on this route typically run $1,215 to $5,243. That's a wide window — the low end reflects smaller, lighter loads with off-peak scheduling. Two- or three-bedroom homes fall between $3,419 and $6,974. Larger households (four or more bedrooms) should plan for $6,493 to $11,802.
If you're going full-service, compare at least three quotes from long-distance movers — pricing varies significantly between carriers even on the same route.
Cost of Moving Containers from San Francisco to Ohio
For a smaller load, moving containers land in the $1,222 to $3,223 range. Two- or three-bedroom homes typically run $2,194 to $4,374. Larger households should budget $3,018 to $6,373. Containers work well on this route if you're flexible on delivery timing and comfortable loading yourself.

Cost of Rental Trucks from San Francisco to Ohio

Two or three bedrooms typically land between $1,411 and $3,091. Larger homes run $1,853 to $3,570. Fuel costs are built into these estimates.

What Drives the Cost of Moving from San Francisco to Ohio
Three factors account for most of the variability in quotes on this route:
- Move size. This is the biggest lever. More weight and cubic footage means higher cost across all service types.
- Time of year. Summer (roughly May through August) is peak season for Bay Area movers. Demand is high, availability is tighter, and rates climb. If you can move in fall or early winter, you'll likely pay less.
- Service level. Full-service is the most expensive but hands off all the labor. Containers are middle ground. Truck rentals cost less upfront but factor in your time, physical effort, lodging for a multi-day drive, and the reality that something always goes sideways on a DIY long-haul.
What to Know Before Moving from San Francisco to Ohio
Cost of Living: San Francisco vs. Ohio
This is where the numbers get interesting — and where a lot of people decide the move makes sense. California's cost of living is among the highest in the country; Ohio sits comfortably below the national average. Here's the side-by-side:
| San Francisco, CA | Ohio | |
|---|---|---|
| Average rent | $3,250/mo | $945/mo |
| Average home cost | $1,241,003 | $230,798 |
| Per capita income | $136,689 | $66,990 |
| Cost of living index | 245 | 94 |
| Unemployment rate | 5.4% | 3.6% |
| State income tax | 13.3% | 3.5% |
Sources: World Population Review, Zillow, US Census Bureau, BLS, Tax Foundation, Zumper, Numbeo
A few things worth calling out:
- Rent in Ohio runs about 71% cheaper than San Francisco. For a lot of people, that monthly delta alone funds the entire relocation within a year.
- Home prices are roughly 81% lower in Ohio. If buying is on your radar, the math shifts dramatically.
- Per capita income in Ohio averages about 51% lower than San Francisco. Don't assume your current salary will transfer directly without researching your specific field and city.
- The overall cost of living index is about 62% lower in Ohio — groceries, utilities, transportation, most day-to-day spending drops meaningfully.
- Ohio's unemployment rate of 3.6% beats San Francisco's 5.4%, which matters if you're relocating without a job locked down.
- California's 13.3% top state income tax rate compared to Ohio's 3.5% is one of the more significant financial changes you'll notice — more take-home pay from the same gross salary.
How Life Changes When You Leave San Francisco for Ohio
The financial picture is compelling for a lot of people, but moving to Ohio is also a genuine lifestyle shift. Here's how the two places compare on the things that affect daily life:
| San Francisco, CA | Ohio | |
|---|---|---|
| Population | 808,988 | 11,785,935 |
| Political leaning | Democratic (85–13) | Republican (55–45) |
| Summer high | 67°F | 84°F |
| Winter low | 46°F | 20°F |
| Annual rain | 25" | 40" |
| Annual snow | 0" | 28" |
| Crime index | 61.41 | 20.76 |
Sources: US Census Bureau, 270TOWIN, NeighborhoodScout, BestPlaces, Wikipedia, AirNow
Here's what those numbers actually mean day-to-day:
- Weather is the biggest adjustment for most SF transplants. Ohio summers hit 84°F — real heat, not San Francisco's famously mild 67°F fog-and-sweater summers. Winters drop to 20°F with 28 inches of snow. You'll need clothes for actual seasons and a budget for heating costs.
- Rain. Ohio gets 40 inches annually versus San Francisco's 25. Not dramatic, but worth knowing if you're used to dry Bay Area winters.
- Crime. Ohio's crime index of 20.76 compares favorably against San Francisco's 61.41. Most people moving from the Bay find this a real quality-of-life improvement.
- Politics. San Francisco leans heavily Democratic; Ohio has trended Republican in recent presidential cycles. If the political character of your community matters to you, factor it in when researching specific cities and neighborhoods.
Practical Checklist Before Moving to Ohio
A few things that trip people up if they don't sort them out early:
- HOA rules: Check your destination community's moving policies before you schedule — some have specific hours, restrictions on truck size, or elevator reservation requirements.
- Elevator reservations: If your SF building has a freight elevator, book it in advance. Same at the destination if applicable.
- Truck parking permits: Some cities require permits for moving trucks on public streets. Verify with both your San Francisco neighborhood and your Ohio destination city ahead of time.
- USDOT verification: Ohio doesn't require a state-specific movers license, but every legitimate interstate mover must be registered with the US Department of Transportation. Ask for any company's USDOT number and verify it on the FMCSA website before you book.
- Moving permits: No statewide permit is required in Ohio, but check local parking rules in your specific destination city.
- Change of address: File your USPS change-of-address form at least a week before the move. It takes five minutes and saves a lot of headaches.
- Moving insurance: Federal regulations require movers to offer Released Value Protection at no cost — but that's 60 cents per pound per item, which isn't much coverage for anything valuable. Ask about full-value protection, or explore third-party moving insurance if you have high-value items.
- Moving checklist: Use our moving checklist to stay organized in the weeks leading up to your move.

Expect seven to eighteen days, depending on the service level and the company. Peak summer moves tend to land toward the longer end of that range. How many San Francisco movers offer custom crating?
Around 80 San Francisco movers can build custom crates for art, antiques, and sensitive electronics. Before you book, confirm that the materials and dimensions are appropriate for your specific items.
What's the best way to ship a car from San Francisco to Ohio?

Why are people moving from San Francisco to Ohio?
Mostly cost of living — especially housing. Ohio's prices on rent, home buying, taxes, and daily expenses are dramatically lower than the Bay Area. Beyond that, people move for family, specific employers, universities, or just a different kind of life.

Either way, expect to pay a deposit upfront to secure your move date, with the balance due at pickup or delivery — confirm the exact schedule with your mover before you commit.
